Melissa Brown is a Partner with Marks, O’Neill, O’Brien, Doherty & Kelly’s New Jersey Office. She is admitted to practice in New Jersey and Pennsylvania Federal and State Courts. Melissa is also a member of the New Jersey Attorney Ethics Committee having been appointed to the role by the New Jersey Supreme Court.
Melissa graduated from Rutgers College in 2004, with a bachelor of arts in Criminal Justice, Political Science and Psychology. She attended Rutgers Law School, graduating in 2007. During law school Melissa was honored in receiving the Reed Smith Clinical Excellence Award. Melissa was also distinguished as a “Best Oralist” in the 2006 Hunter Moot Court Competition, and she was the recipient of the Hon. Rudolph J. Rossetti Memorial Scholarship and the Honorable Nathan C. Staller Scholarship.
During law school, Melissa completed a summer internship for the Honorable John R. Rauh, J.S.C. There, she gained experience in civil procedure and motion practice. Melissa also participated in the Rutgers Mediation Project where she was certified as a “Trained Mediator” and provided mediation services at the Superior Court of New Jersey, Camden County. Finally, Melissa participated in Rutgers’ Civil Justice Clinic and Children’s Justice Clinic where she obtained practical experience while advocating for the rights of indigent clients.
Since joining Marks O’Neill in 2008, Melissa has represented clients in Professional Liability and Healthcare, Municipal and Public Entity Liability, Employment Law, Premises Liability and General Litigation. She focuses her practice on defending constitutional claims arising from deliberate indifference. She handles various types of professional liability cases, including medical malpractice, legal malpractice, broker claims and claims arising under employment law. She represents clients defending cases pending before the New Jersey medical boards. She also has extensive practice in dram shop liability, commercial and private premises liability and personal injury. Melissa has successfully defended cases before the Third Circuit, the New Jersey Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court.
Melissa has been selected as a Super Lawyer Rising Star from 2013-2018. This honor is bestowed on only 2.5% of attorneys in the State of New Jersey who are 40 years old or younger. She has lectured on the topics of deliberate indifference, medical malpractice, medicine, civil practice and insurance bad faith to her peers, claims personnel and students attending local law schools and colleges.
